Wave selection
Good waves usually roll towards the beach as a set (group of several higher waves) at intervals. So it makes sense to wait on the water and choose one of these waves.

Timing and positioning
As the wave builds up, you can often see where it will first be steep and then break. This is particularly important if you want to approach this point at high speed in order to place a move right there.
