Upwind 360

Balz Müller turns the upwind 360 against an incoming wave

The upwind 360 is a good exercise for all windsurfing moves where the sail is held back against the wind. In this video, Balz Müller demonstrates the riding technique against an incoming wave. This allows you to utilize the energy of the wave when turning into upwind direction up. The feet remain in the footstraps.

The trick is similar to a heli tack, except that the sail is not shifted after luffing. Instead, the power of the back-held rig is used to initiate the turn of the board back in the original direction of travel. To do this, the front arm (mast hand) initially remains stretched, while the rear arm pulls the sail tight and pushes the clew through the wind.

Immediately afterwards, the rig is pushed forward - the front arm is bent, the rear arm is stretched and allows the power in the sail to escape via the clew. If the wind is a little stronger, the sail may have to be opened further to let the force of the wind escape to leeward.
