Spock 540

The freestyle classic move as a slideshow

The spock 540 is a normal spock where the board slides a further 180 degrees across the water in addition to the 360-degree rotation. After the slide with one and a half rotation around the vertical axis, you surf back in the opposite direction - a pretty dynamic change of ridiing direction.

The integrated slideshow above shows the move in 19 individual photos. And here are the tips from Klaus Twilling, who put this spock 540 in front of our camera:

On the approach, I surf on a crosswind course to a slight downwind course and look for a small chop for the take-off. The board has to rotate 180 degrees in the air and I initiate this rotation with my upper body.

The direction of view determines the direction of rotation, the rear foot is pulled in. My rear hand grips the mast, the other on the new boom side behind the harness lines (I sail them close together). This grip far back helps me to control the sail when it is pushed through the wind with the leech.

The steeply angled board provides the impulse for the rotation of the final turn. When the clew turns due to the wind, both hands grip the boom and guide the rig forwards. Open the clew, change foot position, done.

The best requirement for learning the spock 540 is that you've already mastered the normal spock. Hopefully the tips listed here will help you with the last 180 degrees. Have fun with your training!
